Summer Camp Gives Youth a Positive Alternative
Our 5th Annual Summer Kids Camp themed, Around a Healthy World in Eight Weeks, consists of academics in the morning, engaging programs in the afternoon, Thursday guest speakers and Friday field trips. The camp serves students between the ages 6-14 years of old from all over Sacramento.
Every morning is opened with an average of 75-80, young and spirited students signing to the song “Yes I can” by Donnie McClurkin. The rhythm and lyrics help create an inspirational and confident atmosphere that is present throughout the program.
After the morning song, three credentialed and experienced teachers collaborate to teach core subjects: English, Math and Science. Our fourth teacher creatively interconnects all three subjects for the teens; who has their own program located off site at the Methodist Church.
The afternoons are engrossed with a variety of programs for students. Twice a week the students spend the entire afternoon splashing in the water with their peers and team leaders at the Johnston Pool. The other two days allow students to experience: karate, art, break dance, cooking, drumming, and much more.
Towards the end of the week, students and parent volunteers prepare for an entire day out on a field trip within and outside of Sacramento. Since the camp started our students have toured the Travis Air Force Base and boarded the Sacramento Regional Transit Light Rail for a scavenger hunt in Downtown Sacramento. (Summer Camp Update Info)
One of our exciting trips allowed our students to ride their bikes from the Center to the American River Trail. From there they met the Sacramento Fire Department preparing hamburgers and hotdogs for an afternoon lunch at the Discovery Park. Throughout the week the students participated in bike safety trainings and a brief seminar about Tour de France. Plus, with the generous donations from the Sheriff’s Toy Shop and the Sacramento Police Department, each student was given one bike and a helmet for their own Tour de North Sacramento ride. It was a kid’s dream to block off the streets and a ride down the streets with his/her friends not having to worry about traffic or their safety.
